Individual Counseling and Individual Therapy at Lexington Counseling and Psychiatry-The Offices of Paul Dalton

Individual counseling and or therapy is the cornerstone of mental health treatment. In every location we have professionals that will help you individually by listening to your concerns, assisting with setting goals you want to reach, and helping you find solutions. We may use individual counseling to prepare for another service (like family and or marital therapy).

What is individual counseling or therapy?

Individual counseling or individual therapy is an opportunity to talk confidentially with a counselor about personal concerns and to facilitate personal growth. The counselor and client work together to define and discuss personal issues and to reach mutually agreed upon goals. Sessions usually last 45 to 55 minutes depending on the age of the client, the service code, and your insurance or EAP plan.

Individual therapy (sometimes called “psychotherapy” or “counseling”) is a process through which clients work one-on-one with a trained therapist in a safe, caring, and confidential environment to explore their feelings, beliefs, or behaviors, work through challenging or influential memories, identify aspects of their lives that they would like to change, better understand themselves and others, set personal goals, and work toward desired change.

People seek therapy for a wide variety of reasons, from coping with major life challenges or childhood trauma, to dealing with depression or anxiety, to simply desiring personal growth and greater self-knowledge. A client and therapist may work together for as few as five or six sessions or as long as several years, depending on the client’s unique needs and personal goals for therapy.

Individual Therapy is a cooperative relationship between a single therapist and a single client in order to help the client change an aspect of their life. The focus of the therapeutic relationship should be on improving the strategies an individual may utilize to enhance emotional and mental health.

Individual counseling is an educational process at its heart. This means that when the therapeutic relationship comes to an end, the client will have a knowledge base of valuable, applicable techniques to help manage any recurrence of a similar issue more easily.

Individual counseling is a helping profession staffed by people who want to do just that: help. Are you ready to take the first step? Counseling works. Get help now by calling us at 859-338-0466 or Contact Us Today!

It may be pertinent to consider therapy if you are experiencing distressing emotions for an extended duration. These can be feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or apathy. It is important to seek help if these feelings do not lessen after efforts have been made to feel better or after receiving support from family or friends. Counseling can be beneficial if you are finding it difficult to carry out daily routines. It could be an issue of feeling that getting out of bed is “pointless” or it could be that you find it difficult to focus on one task. If you feel that your actions could become harmful to yourself or to those around you, it is crucial that you seek assistance. Even if your experience doesn’t seem extreme, seeking help for your problems can allow you to gain a better sense of fulfillment, peach, or happiness from your life, which may be impossible if you continue to let your issues burden you. Our therapists are here to help with any of the mental, emotional, or behavioral issues that are weighing heavily on you, so please do not wait!

The Benefits to Therapy and Why It Is Important to Seek out Help
By Chelsea Conner August 14, 2025
Substance use is a growing health concern. 47.7 million Americans reported the use of illegal substances according to a study conducted in 2023 by The National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics. A Substance Use Disorder (SUD), defined by The American Psychiatric Association, is ‘a complex condition in which there is uncontrolled use of a substance despite harmful consequences.’ The American Psychiatric Association recognizes that someone who has a SUD has an intense urge to engage in any of the listed substances - alcohol, tobacco, or psychoactive substances that impact daily functioning, interpersonal relationships, and overall health. Another term well known for SUD is addiction. There is no single cause for a SUD but rather, a combination of factors can contribute to its development. Self-medication, genetics, peer pressure, curiosity, performance enhancement, and medical use turned misuse can all lead to someone engaging in problem use with substances and even addiction. Another study conducted in 2023 by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, showed that 70% of people who sought out treatment for substance abuse/misuse reported improvements to their overall health and functioning within the first year of treatment. There are several available options for treatment, including outpatient care, intensive outpatient care, and in-patient care treatment. It is also important to have a collaborative approach when it comes to treatment for a SUD to have the best outcome, which can include medication management, individual therapy, group therapy, peer support, AA/NA meetings, sponsor, and a healthy support system within interpersonal relationships. It's important to remember that addiction is not a moral failing, it's a complex medical condition that can affect anyone. Compassion, understanding, and proper treatment are essential to recovery and can lead to successful outcomes. Some treatment modalities that have shown success in therapy when treating SUD include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Contingency Management (CM), Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) and Motivational Interviewing (MI), as well as a facilitated 12 step program and a trauma focused lens. Whether you're concerned about your own substance use or worried about a loved one, help is available and healing is possible!
